This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide support at the blast site for underground shotfiring operations.

The unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining and metalliferous mining sectors.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between States, Territories and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. Access, interpret and apply blasting documentation for allocated job, and ensure the work activity is compliant 
Obtain, confirm and apply shotfiring requirements, shift briefings, handover details and/or work orders 
Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete allocated job 
Identify health, safety and environmental hazards, assess the risks, and implement control measures in line with workplace procedures 
Locate, select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities 
Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency 
Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencing work activity 
Establish, secure and isolate blast site 
Ensure holes are drilled to authorised blast plan 
Flush or clean and test drill holes 
Follow appropriate precautionary measures relevant to ground conditions, including identifying reactive ores and using explosion inhibitor as required 
Collect explosives and accessories, and identify and report deteriorated items 
Transport explosives according to requirements and procedures 
Remove from blast site equipment and facilities not required for loading 
Load and stem explosives in line with workplace procedures 
Monitor hazards, identify potential emergency situations, and respond appropriately to meet changing work conditions 
Complete muck out and/or final clean-up in line with workplace procedures 
Assist with securing blast site after work activity is complete
